“Naughty” – Alisha Weir and The Cast of Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical (2022)
A dance from Matilda the Musical went viral before the New Year with the song “Revolting Children.” The Netflix film adaptation of the 2010 musical strikes again on TikTok with the song “Naughty.” In the trend, creators film themselves, their kids, and sometimes their adorable pets, being a little bit rebellious.
To hear songs from Broadway shows like Matilda The Musical – the inspiration behind the hit film – listen to On Broadway (Ch. 77).
“New Soul” – Yael Naim (2007)
This sound is a blast from the past for all the users who created content on Musical.ly before it merged with TikTok back in 2017. One of the hit songs on Musical.ly was a sped-up version of Yael Naim’s 2007 upbeat indie folk song, “New Soul.” The trend throws back to Musical.ly’s roots of lip-syncing along to the lyrics while performing simple gestures. Several high-profile content creators, including BeastEater and Bryce Hall, have used the sound.
If you like “New Soul,” check out the relaxing vibes of The Coffee House (Ch. 6).
“Hey Sexy Lady (ft. Brian & Tony Gold)” – Shaggy (2002)
Shaggy’s 2002 hit single “Hey Sexy Lady” has been all over TikTok recently. Used for a multitude of videos, from compilations featuring their favorite celebrities to comedy skits, the iconic song has made a resurgence on TikTok, and Shaggy fans are loving it!

“The Freshmen” – The Verve Pipe (1997)
Alternative rock band The Verve Pipe’s song “The Freshmen” was considered their breakthrough hit, reaching fifth place in the Billboard charts in 1997. Now, 26 years later, the song is back in the spotlight, accompanied by an effect that allows users to see what they’d look like if they were teenagers again. Some users have reacted with surprise at the accuracy of the effect, and others have been brought to tears by it. The emotional tune focuses on young love and the regrets of youth, and acts as a moving soundtrack to the trend.
If you’re a fan of The Verve Pipe, check out more alternative rock on Alt Nation (Ch. 36).
“Forever Young” – Alphaville (1984)
Continuing along with the theme of nostalgia, few songs sum up the subject better than Alphaville’s 1984 synth-pop ballad “Forever Young.” TikTok users have taken to featuring this song alongside several types of videos, from comparing celebrities to their younger selves to reacting to the same filter used alongside “The Freshmen.”
