Outspoken former Major League Baseball pitcher Curt Schilling is proud to live in a country where Colin Kaepernick can refuse to stand during the national anthem, but he says anyone who compares the NFL quarterback to Jackie Robinson is a “special kind of stupid.”

Kaepernick, a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, is under fire following his decision not to stand for the national anthem at Friday night’s preseason NFL game against the Green Bay Packers. Kaepernick told media after the game that he would not “show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.”

Comparisons have now been drawn to Jackie Robinson, who broke the color barrier in baseball by becoming the first African-American to play in the MLB. Robinson wrote in his 1972 biography that he “cannot stand and sing the anthem…I know that I am a black man in a white world.”

However, Schilling argued that times have changed and that the experiences of Robinson and Kaepernick are not at all on the same level.

“Jackie Robinson, and what those African-Americans, especially baseball players went through to become Major League ballplayers, that’s the definition of oppression and racism,” Schilling told Breitbart News Daily. “Do you want to have a police state? Do you want the government to run our daily lives to quote-unquote ensure no racism.”

Schilling also took aim at the media for their coverage of Kaepernick’s protest, saying their support for the quarterback has been hypocritical.

“This is the same sport whose media, on a weekly basis, couldn’t wait to vilify Tim Tebow for bowing in prayer, lowering his head in prayer to God as a Christian,” Schilling said. “You go back and look at that and they just went nuts and berated this guy…those same people are saying, ‘good for you, Colin.'”
