Will Smith & Martin Lawrence put the “for life” in ‘Bad Boys for Life’ during their visit to the SiriusXM studios.

Bad Boys for Life may not be your run-of-the-mill buddy cop movie, but that doesn’t mean Will Smith and Martin Lawrence aren’t buddies playing cops. Smith and Lawrence stopped by for a SiriusXM Town Hall and put the “for life” in Bad Boys for Life while covering everything from Instagram to family in conversation with Sway’s Universe host Sway Calloway for Shade 45 (Ch. 45).

Smith’s status as a man of many talents was evident as he touched on his roles as a social media king, the Bad Boys trilogy’s Mike Lowrey, and the Fresh Prince — when challenged to remember the lyrics to “Brand New Funk,” he more than delivered, resulting in an impromptu performance of the 1988 hit. It’s safe to say he’s still got it (“it” being both skill and a downright impressive memory).

When Smith wasn’t spitting rhymes, he and Lawrence reflected on the importance of holding down their families and nepotism in entertainment. While their children (who you may recognize as killing it in their own right, including a BBfL cameo from Lawrence’s daughter, Jasmine) may be on slightly different paths in the industry, Smith and Lawrence are on the same wavelength when it comes to creating opportunities for them to thrive.

This synergy is likely due in part to the duo’s 25-year history — Bad Boys (released in 1995) introduced Smith and Lawrence as Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, two lifelong friends and Miami detectives investigating a high-risk drug heist they suspect may be an inside job. Bad Boys for Life, the third installment of the franchise, comes 17 years after the sequel, Bad Boys II. As the pair reprise their roles, the near-retirement cops reunite when faced with a threat from a vicious cartel leader. Don’t miss Bad Boys for Life when it hits theaters nationwide this Friday, January 17.
