Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina and one of the country’s most influential voices on foreign policy and national security, has died at the age of 71 after what his office described as a “brief and sudden illness.”

Graham served in the U.S. Senate from 2003 until his death after representing South Carolina in the House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003. Over more than two decades in the Senate, he became a leading Republican voice on judicial confirmations, national security, and foreign policy, and was a close ally of President Donald Trump in recent years. Under South Carolina law, Gov. Henry McMaster is expected to appoint a temporary successor while preparations begin for a special election. Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum.
