California voters head to the polls today in one of the most closely watched elections of 2026, with a crowded race to replace term-limited Governor Gavin Newsom at the top of the ballot.
Leading candidates in the governor’s race include Democrats Xavier Becerra, Katie Porter, Tom Steyer, and Matt Mahan, along with Republicans Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco. Under California’s primary system, the two candidates who receive the most votes, regardless of party, will advance to the November general election.
When Do Polls Close?
Polls across California are open until 11pm ET/8pm PT, though final results could take days as vote-by-mail ballots continue to be counted.
