San Francisco 49ers General Manager John Lynch joined SiriusXM NFL Radio to discuss Brock Purdy’s recovery from offseason elbow surgery, why the team believed in the young quarterback after his breakout rookie season, and the competition within San Francisco’s quarterback room.
When asked about the 49ers’ quarterback situation, Lynch said Purdy had earned the inside track after leading the team to the NFC Championship Game as a rookie. While acknowledging that competition is part of every NFL roster, Lynch praised Purdy’s performance and said the organization believed what it saw wasn’t a fluke.
“Yeah, I think that there’s always competition,” Lynch said. “With the way Brock came in and played last year, you look back and ask, ‘Is it a flash in the pan or is it the real deal?’ As we’ve gone back and studied it, he played at a high, high level … and showed tremendous playmaking ability … [and] a tremendous ability to push the ball downfield.”
Lynch also provided an encouraging update on Purdy’s recovery after the quarterback underwent surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his throwing elbow following the NFC Championship Game. He said Purdy was meeting every benchmark while emphasizing that the organization would not rush his return.
“He’s hitting all his markers, and it doesn’t surprise us because he’s putting in the work,” Lynch said. “We’re not gonna do anything to put Brock in a situation where he’s not fully healed … so we’ll take it as it comes. He’s working incredibly hard, and the early returns are really good.”
While Purdy was viewed as the frontrunner, Lynch said the 49ers were encouraged by the progress of Trey Lance, who was returning from a season-ending ankle injury, and by the addition of veteran Sam Darnold. He said the team valued having multiple capable quarterbacks competing throughout the offseason.
“He’s had a really, really quality offseason. We still remain very high on Trey,” Lynch said. “We wanted to bring in some more competition. We brought in Sam, and Sam’s really taken to the coaching and the structure that we can give him.”
Lynch added: “At the end of the day, we feel really good about that position. We think Brock probably is the leader in the clubhouse, as we said, but it will be open for competition. It’s those guys’ opportunity to go in and earn that job.”
