Mike Vrabel Says Drake Maye Is More Vocal Than He Thought

“We had him miked up, and he says a lot more in the huddle than I thought he would,” the Patriots head coach said.

Drake Maye may not say much publicly, but New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel says the young quarterback is more vocal on the field than many people realize.

Speaking during the Patriots’ NFL Training Camp Tour episode on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Vrabel shared that he was pleasantly surprised after hearing Maye communicate in the huddle.

“We had him mic’d up, and he says a lot more in the huddle than I thought he would,” Vrabel said.

The coach added that leadership and communication are essential qualities for any NFL quarterback.

“The guys need to hear the quarterback,” he said. “You want to hear the quarterback tell you that it’s going to be OK.”

Vrabel said Maye continues to grow as a leader, learning when to speak up and command the attention of his teammates during critical moments.

“It’s been fun to watch him play,” Vrabel said. “Hopefully, we have just as much fun watching him play this year.”
