Sting Opens Up About AI, Songwriting, and Leaving The Police on ‘SmartLess’

“AI can create pop music that you would hear in a hotel lobby… but there’s a difference between listening to something and hearing something,” Sting said.

Sting joins Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett on a new episode of SmartLess, available one week early with SiriusXM Early Access, for a wide-ranging conversation about songwriting, AI-generated music, The Police, and the deeply personal inspiration behind “The Last Ship.”

Sting Reflects on Leaving The Police

During the episode, Sting reflected on his decision to leave The Police at the height of the band’s success, explaining that he wanted to “start the adventure again” before the band reached a point of “diminishing returns.”

Sting Shares His Thoughts on AI Music

The legendary musician also shared his thoughts on artificial intelligence and music, saying AI may be able to create technically polished songs, but it can’t replicate lived human experience:

“AI can create perfectly serviceable pop music that you would hear in a hotel lobby… but there’s a difference between listening to something and hearing something.”

“What I’m listening for in a piece of music created by a human being is that that human being has lived a life,” he added. “Has had its heart broken. Has been in love.”
