Sandra Bullock Reveals Why She Kept Bryan Randall’s ALS Diagnosis Secret
“I wasn’t allowed to speak about it. That was the request,” the Oscar-winning actress said.

Listen to Sandra Bullock’s new episode of SmartLess with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett one week early with SiriusXM’s exclusive early access.
During her return to the show, the Oscar-winning actress opens up about privately caring for her late partner, Bryan Randall, during his battle with ALS in a deeply personal conversation.
Sandra reveals that Bryan asked her to keep his illness private, leaving her unable to confide in even some of her closest friends as she navigated his diagnosis during the pandemic. Bryan died in 2023 following a private three-year battle with ALS.
“I wasn’t allowed to speak about it. That was the request,” Sandra said.
She also describes the secrecy as isolating while she coordinated nurses, sought access to trial drugs and helped her two children process Bryan’s declining health.
“I wasn’t even allowed to tell Amanda. I wasn’t allowed to tell anybody,” she said. “My sister was the only one who knew for a while.”
Sandra also talks to Jason, Sean, and Will about Practical Magic 2, scammers and joining Instagram, and more.
