Mark Barron Says Rams Defenders Are Starting to Get Comfortable with the Scheme

It was a major transition.

The Los Angeles Rams had used a 4-3 defense under coach Jeff Fisher. Many of the players who had been a part of it are still on the club.

Now, with Sean McVay as coach, the Rams are playing in the 3-4 look of new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. And they’re excelling in it on the way to a 7-2 record.

“Obviously, it’s been a learning process, especially for me because … I’m playing inside linebacker and last year I was playing outside,” Mark Barron told Alex Marvez and Mark Dominik on “Late Hits” on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “But everything’s been going well, and I feel like we’re starting to get more and more comfortable with the scheme, so you’re starting to make more and more plays with everything. I think it’s only going to get better and better for us. Hopefully, we can keep it going.”

Barron has been highly impressed with McVay, who at 31 is the NFL’s youngest coach. Despite McVay’s youth and inexperience, Barron considers him a stickler for details.

“I think the biggest thing with Sean is his attention to detail and how adamant he is about it,” Barron said. “He’ll be around coaches, and all of them kind of have similar messages and preach the same thing. But this guy, he’s extremely adamant about details. If you came to watch our practices, I feel like it would be obvious to you. It wouldn’t be hard to tell what was important to him as far as details and making sure everything’s executed the way it’s supposed to be executed. And I feel like that’s probably one of the biggest keys to our success is that attention we’ve been putting into the details.”
