John Mayer Previews “Tom and Jerry”
Ahead of the world premiere on Life with John Mayer, John shared the meaning behind “Tom and Jerry” in a post on social media, “explaining it “was the name I used when saving my first voice memo with this song idea.”
John first announced his first single in five years in an Instagram post on his 49th birthday, October 16, writing, “Thank you for waiting.”
In the snippet, John sings the lyrics, “You’re my badge, Baby, I’m your scar, Throwin’ daggers at the camera, Tryin’ to hit me from afar.”
Days later, John shared an intimate look inside the studio as he sang along to the song. “Tom and Jerry” marks John’s first single since 2021’s “Wild Blue” from his eighth studio album, Sob Rock.
The Grammy winner’s latest release also comes on the heels of the announcement of his 2027 residency at Sphere in Las Vegas. John’s 21-show run will start in April and run through June.
Each show will feature John’s music in three different forms: solo, full band, and the John Mayer Trio.
For the solo portion, John will perform alone onstage, with an emphasis on acoustic guitar as well as performances on piano and electric guitar. The John Mayer Trio — John, Steve Jordan, and Pino Palladino — will also reunite in concert for the first time since 2017.
