Global powerhouse 88rising is joining forces with comedian Joel Kim Booster to launch a new comedy and conversation series, Joy F*ck Club, on 88rising Radio (ch. 305).
Each week, the Los Angeles-based stand-up comedian and actor will connect with a superstar roster of Asian comics, from Bowen Yang (SNL) to Ronny Chieng (The Daily Show), to serve up hot topics and hot takes on Asian-American life. Leading a wave of discussions on Asian-American identity, the Joy F*ck Club is a lighthearted and necessary conversation that explores the nuances and experiences of being Asian in America.
With TV and film credits that include Sunnyside (NBC), Shrill (Hulu), Search Party (TBS), BoJack Horseman, Big Mouth, and The Week Of (Netflix), Joel’s infectious comedy lights up stages and screens across America. Joy F*ck Club will give listeners a front row seat inside Booster’s imaginary comedy club, where emerging and established Asian comics debate and dispel Asian stereotypes, as well as share their own stories on their Asian-American experience.The show will air on Thursdays at 8pm ET and will be available to watch on the SiriusXM app beginning Fridays at 8am ET. April 1 – Ronny Chieng (The Daily Show)
On the premiere episode, Ronny will explore the cultural differences he’s observed across three continents and break down the fate and hard work that went into his appearances in Crazy Rich Asians and his Netflix specialAsian Comedian Destroys America!, while flying the flag for finding the only Asian comedian in town.
April 8 – Aparna Nancherla
Aparna joins Joel to discuss the “layers of shame” and “being the only one” as an Asian, why she thought she passed as white, and how sneaking snacks into theatres is a shared Asian American phenomenon.
April 15 – Sierra Katow
Joel invites Sierra onto the show to talk about the achievements in their careers that fill their tank up as well as the weight they carry from being pathologized as an Asian person in America. Sierra also shares about the time her whole family attended her first comedy show when she was 16 and why she thinks keeping the boat chill is the most Asian American trait.
April 22 – Aaron Chen
Aaron joins Joel to offer his Aussie perspective on being a comedian and being Asian in Australia, how he masters one-liners and (the lack of) transitions in his stand-up sets, the times his father drove him to his first open mics, and his experiences of doing comedy in America, Australia, and China.
April 29 – Karen Chee (Late Night with Seth Meyers)
Karen and Joel discuss the difference between west coast and east coast Asians, what rom-com they would star in together, and how they both learned about comedy and storytelling from Calvin and Hobbes. Karen also shares why getting friendly with older Asians makes her uncomfortable, how she ended up writing for the Golden Globes and NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers, and why she thought Yo-Yo Ma was her father.
May 6 – Bowen Yang (SNL, Nora from Queens)
Bowen and Joel dish on Hollywood conspiracies about them, the labor of explaining themselves on set, and how queerness and race intersect in their lives. Bowen also shares about his experiences on SNL and Awkwafina is Nora from Queens, the difference between French Canadian and American racism, and how he wants to make it easier for the next Asian person.
Addressing recent events surrounding the Asian-American community, 88rising has also launched 88rising Speakers — a series of conversations exploring the Asian-American experience, past and present, featuring AAPI leaders across industries from politics to female empowerment to small businesses.
