‘May December’ Town Hall with Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman, and Charles Melton
The cast of the acclaimed movie sat down with Jess Cagle and Julia Cunningham.
Charles Melton’s role in May December has been critically acclaimed. But was he too hot to play Joe in the Netflix movie? Its filmmaker, Todd Haynes, initially thought so.“When Todd said that I was too good-looking or whatever I thought, ‘That was very sweet,’” Melton said.
“I consider that the highest compliment, host Jess Cagle chimed in.” “Like, you’re just too good-looking for this, I was like, ‘Dang, OK.’”
Many of us are breathing a sigh of relief that the Carol (2015) director ultimately selected Melton, who has quickly gone from CW Riverdale teen heartthrob to Oscar contender. He starred alongside Oscar winners Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman, who have garnered praise for their performances as well.
Directed by Haynes and penned by Samy Burch (from a story by Burch and Alex Mechanik), May December is a fictionalized depiction of the actual case of Mary Kay Letourneau – a Seattle school teacher sentenced to over seven years in prison for child rape after she started a sexual relationship with her sixth-grade student Vili Fualaau in 1996.
During the May December Town Hall hosted by Jess Cagle and Julia Cunningham, Moore, Portman, and Melton also discussed Gracie and Joe’s complicated marriage, embodying real characters, and the movies Haynes sent them for inspiration.
