Horses to watch

After this year’s Kentucky Derby ended with a photo finish, all eyes are on winner Mystik Dan as he competes in the second jewel of the Triple Crown: the Preakness Stakes.

Other horses racing in the Preakness include Muth, Tuscan Gold, Imagination, Just Steel, Seize the Gray, Copper Tax, Uncle Heavy, and Mugatu. Despite his Derby win over 18-1 odds, Mystik Dan is not the favorite to win on Saturday; Muth — who missed the Derby due to trainer Bob Baffert’s suspension — leads the pack as the experts’ pick.

It’s been five years since a horse won both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes (Justify in 2018, who went on to also win the Belmont Stakes). A Baffert horse, National Treasure, won last year’s Preakness, earning Baffert his eighth Preakness win as trainer.

Mystik Dan and Muth last went head-to-head in March’s Arkansas Derby, where Mystik Dan came in third and Muth first. Imagination is also Baffert trained; both Muth and Imagination have never finished lower than first or second in every race of their careers.

About Pimlico

Pimlico Race Course, home of the Preakness Stakes since 1870, was conceived by Maryland’s Governor Bowie after a dinner party proposition in Saratoga, NY. Despite a hiatus in the late 19th century, Pimlico has thrived, surviving anti-gambling movements and embracing innovations like electric starting gates. Today, it stands as a cherished American institution, celebrated for hosting legends and enduring as a symbol of horse racing’s rich history.
