About the Belmont Stakes

Known as the “Test of the Champion,” the Belmont Stakes is the oldest and longest of the three races that comprise the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing in the United States.

It was first run on June 19, 1867, at Jerome Park Racetrack in the Bronx, NY, making it one of the oldest horse races in America. The race was named after financier and sportsman August Belmont Sr., and has been held at various locations, including Morris Park Racecourse, Belmont Park, and now Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, NY.

The Belmont Stakes is traditionally run over a distance of 1.5 miles (12 furlongs), making it the longest of the Triple Crown races, which also include the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. This distance has earned the Belmont its nickname as it tests the endurance and versatility of the competing horses.

The race is held five weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks after the Preakness Stakes, typically in early June. Over the years, the Belmont Stakes has witnessed numerous historic moments, including the crowning of Triple Crown champions such as Secretariat, who set a still-standing track and world record in 1973 with a time of 2:24.
