Cory Booker: "Racist Legacy" Of The Filibuster Causing "Strangulation" In The Senate

About This Clip
Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) to Joe Madison: "We are struggling in this Senate and in this country with the strangulation of racism that still continues to hurt, not just Black folk, but all folk. And it has manifested in the Senate with rules that really were sharpened during the fight against civil rights. The so-called filibuster is not a constitutional part of the Senate. It came to be more than a century into the Senate's history and really was perfected by people like Strom Thurman, who has the record for the longest filibuster, to stop the advances of African Americans towards equality. And so here we still have this racist legacy."
