C.J. Spiller couldn’t see it working out a whole lot better.
The running back signed with a quality team in free agency. He’s going to be with a coach who knows how to take advantage of his skills as a runner and receiver. He sees a chance to add leadership to a place where already plenty of it exists.
‘I thought it made sense’
In short, the Kansas City Chiefs were, as Spiller told Alex Marvez and Bill Polian on Late Hits, the “perfect match.”
“I thought it made sense,” he said. “I think it’s going to be fun. I think, once I get there and learn the playbook and learn the ins and outs of it and understand what they’re doing, I think I’ll fit into it well. Especially when I (saw) the way that he used (Brian) Westbrook when he was in Philadelphia, so I’m kind of the same type of player, that hybrid kind, get in space and move around, so I’m excited about it.
‘He works hard, but he also understands his players’
“Everybody I’ve talked to said he’s a wonderful coach. He works hard, but he also understands his players and he’s always asking advice from older guys on the team, getting the feel for how the guys, how the locker room’s doing. You couldn’t ask for a better situation with great leadership right there in Kansas City. They have a strong locker room. I’m just trying to go there to add a piece to the puzzle.”
Spiller said he will bring plenty to the Chiefs.
‘The only thing that’s on my mind is how I can help this team win a Super Bowl’
“Explosiveness, a fast-learner, some leadership for that running back room,” he said. “And then just a competitor — a guy that loves to win, wants to win. The only thing that’s on my mind is how can I help this team win a Super Bowl. I think that’s really what I kind of base my foundation on is how can I help this team win, and the only way you can do that is through your work ethic, through your practice habits and, obviously, going out there on game day and doing what you’re supposed to do.”
